I. The Faithful God Keeps Covenant to a Thousand Generations

BHS: כִּי מֵאַהֲבַת יְהוָה אֶתְכֶם וּמִשָּׁמְרוֹ אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם הוֹצִיא יְהוָה אֶתְכֶם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה

וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים הָאֵל הַנֶּאֱמָן שֹׁמֵר הַבְּרִית וְהַחֶסֶד לְאֹהֲבָיו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי מִצְIתָיו לְאֶלֶף דּֽוֹר׃

“Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.” Deuteronomy 7:8-9

The Hebrew text emphasizes יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ (YHVH your God) is הָאֵל הַנֶּאֱמָן—the God who is faithful (ne’eman).

This faithfulness is not arbitrary; it is conditioned upon the covenant relationship:

.לְאֹהֲבָיו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי מִצְוֹתָיו - to those who love him and keep his commandment
